Frequently Asked Questions

Want to find out more about what Airbourne Building Solutions Offers then feel free to browse our FAQ below.

When mould is disturbed, the spores may be released into the air. You can then be exposed to the spores through the air you breathe. Also, if you handle mouldy materials, you can be exposed to mould and mould spores through contact with your skin.
Once spores settle in your home (every home has a “normal” amount of settled spores), they need moisture to begin growing (reproducing) and digesting whatever they are growing on. Mould can grow on almost any surface if the conditions are ideal.  When excess moisture or water builds up in your home from leaks, flooding, condensation or high humidity, conditions are often ideal for mould growth.
Exposure to damp and mouldy environments may cause a variety of health effects. Some people are sensitive to moulds. For these people, exposure to moulds can lead to symptoms such as stuffy nose, wheezing, red or itchy eyes, or skin. Others with allergies to moulds or with asthma, may have more intense reactions. Severe reactions may occur among workers exposed to large amounts of moulds in occupational settings, such as farmers working around mouldy hay. Severe reactions may include fever and shortness of breath.
At the first signs of small surface mould, you should try to clean and remove the visible spores with a mix of vinegar and water or a good general cleaning agent and microfibre cloth. Biocides like bleach can be a food source for some types of mould. Please contact Airbourne Building Solution for expert advice.
Once you book an assessment with Airbourne Building Solutions, we will arrange a convenient time to undertake a complete site inspection. Depending on the size of the building, an inspection could take up to 6-8 hours.
Following a site assessment, our samples are sent off to an independent laboratory for analysis. These results can take up to 72 hours and will provide you with exact information about any toxins found in your home or office. A report will be provided, which will take 5-10 business days.
Booking a consultation is easy. Please visit our contacts page and submit an online form or call us on 0430 190 297.
We pride ourselves on offering a quality value-for-money service that doesn’t cost the earth. The cost of an assessment will vary depending on the size of the premises and the quantity of sampling required.

Mould growth key factors

1. Moisture is the key factor that supports microbial growth. This can arise from water vapour (steam, humidity) or liquid water (condensation and water sources) or the water naturally found in a material that can be used to support microbial growth (water activity). Find the source of the moisture, and you will prevent the growth.

2. Temperature affects fungal growth by controlling the rate at which biochemical reactions occur and through its control over the substrate water activity.

3. Light primarily influences fungal sporulation rather than mycelial growth. Many fungi require some exposure to light to stimulate spore production. It is a myth that fungi prefer dark environments; instead, it is the fact that dark environments are damper and humid.

4. Food. Fungi can use almost any substrate as a source of food. This includes nearly all of your building materials, clothes, household dust and furnishings. Cellulose based materials like particle board, medium density fibreboard, and plasterboard are ideal, which is why our homes have become a haven for microbes.

Most common fungi found in water-damaged buildings are listed below.

  • Alternaria
  • Aspergillus/ Penicillium
  • Chaetomium
  • Cladosporium
  • Fusarium
  • Stachybotrys
  • Trichoderma

All these fungi species grow differently; some need long-standing water events, others are continuous damp materials.
